Born in rural Tennessee in 1946, Parton grew up in a large family with very little money. Music became her escape and, from an early age, she began writing songs and performing. After moving to Nashville following high school, her extraordinary songwriting talent quickly began to open doors.

Her career would go on to produce some of the most enduring songs in popular music.

“Jolene”, “9 to 5”, “Coat of Many Colors”, “Here You Come Again” and “I Will Always Love You” are among her best-known recordings. The latter became an even bigger global hit when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard soundtrack in 1992.

Parton was also a hugely successful collaborator, including her famous partnership with Kenny Rogers on “Islands in the Stream”, while her work alongside Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt on Trio became another celebrated chapter in her career. (Pitchfork⁠)

Parton won 11 Grammy Awards, received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and, in 2022, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
